SEM Facility
CASP houses a Zeiss EVO MA 15 variable pressure scanning electron microscope that is capable of imaging coated and uncoated samples. The SEM is equipped with SE and BSE detectors, and Oxford Instruments Ultim Max-100 EDS and Unity combined BSE and EDS detectors.
The instrumental set up enables sub-micron morphological detail to be captured and combined with compositional maps through X-ray analysis, and quantitative analysis of major elements and some trace elements. The Unity detector is capable of rapid chemical analysis on rough unpolished surfaces due to its position below the pole piece. Associated AZtecFeature and AZtecMineral software permit particle analysis and automated mineralogy.
Samples can be mounted in epoxy, cut, polished and carbon coated at CASP, ready for introduction into the instrument.

Access accrues a modest charge to contribute towards instrument running and maintenance costs.
