Simon Richard Appleton Kelly (1949-2023)
Simon R. A. Kelly passed away peacefully on 19th May 2023, surrounded by his family. As a scholar, Simon will be remembered for his achievements in the taxonomy and nomenclature of Jurassic and Cretaceous bivalves and bivalve ichnotaxa, which remained his most cherished research subjects throughout his career. Having attended numerous field seasons at high latitudes, Simon also made significant scientific contributions to the Mesozoic biostratigraphy and lithostratigraphy of the Arctic and Antarctic. Those of us who had the privilege to spend time with Simon in the field, whether in his favourite trench in the Woburn Sands Formation at Upware, Cambridgeshire (Kelly and Rolfe, 2021), or in remote eastern Greenland or Arctic Canada, will have seen him in his element. Simon was an accomplished field geologist and tireless collector of fossils and data. Simon’s enthusiasm for palaeontology, his everlasting cheerfulness and serenity, and his consideration made him a wonderful companion. He is survived by his wife, Christina, and their three sons Thomas, Edward, and Patrick.
